Education

I am a 24-year-old college student (and I will always be a student) studying Business Administration - Marketing. I recently completed Cambridge's CELTA course, giving me an understanding of how to help English learners effectively. We taught classes to people actually trying to learn English. In one of our assignments, we had to focus on one of our students and recognize lingual differences and help our learner overcome a pronunciation problem and a grammar problem. My learner was from Venezuela, so after great research, I was able to identify problems typical for those who speak Spanish and Catalan. I also have other resources available that can help me identify problems typical to those from other backgrounds (i.e., Russian, Chinese, Punjabi, et cetera). I took Latin for two years in high school and recently began learning German in college, so I understand the difficulties that a new speaker is undertaking and can help break things down for them easier.

Experience

I've tutored in the past through word of mouth and have just recently joined the online tutoring community. I enjoy helping others, that's one of my primary drives in life. I participated in many sports in school, was part of the student government, and even created an organization called the All Student Alliance to petition the school with needs of the student body and facilitate greater communication between the two. My experience from the CELTA was particularly informative regarding tutoring as we covered various teaching strategies to discover the most effective for learner retention.

Hobbies

I must confess, I am a bookworm. I enjoy the classics and my favorite book is the philosophical work 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius. I am into the organic food movement and frequent the farmer's market. I walk with my dog in my spare time and attend martial arts classes for further fitness. I love a good game of chess, a peaceful conversation about politics/philosophy and drawing (primarily with charcoal). I am also in the process of creating a community garden for the City of Lynchburg.
